Infiltration bid foiled; Major among five killed

Srinagar, Jun 8 (PTI) An army Major, another soldier and
three militants were killed when security forces thwarted an
infiltration bid by ultras from across the border in India's
northern state Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district Monday.

Army confronted a group of heavily-armed militants at
Gulab Post near the Line of Control when they were trying to
sneak into Kashmir valley, SSP (Kupwara) Uttam Chand told PTI.

The militants fired at security forces in a bid to escape
and in the resultant gunfight, two soldiers, one of them a
Major, and three ultras were killed.

The army personnel killed were Major Rushikash Vauadhai
and Sepoy Jagtar Singh, both belonging to the 23 Punjab unit.

A Junior Commissioned Officer was also wounded in the
gunbattle and was hospitalised.

The SSP said a massive search operation was launched by
the army in the area three days ago following reports that
ultras from across the border might infiltrate into the
valley.

He said the operation was still on. PTI AMS
