Govt committed to peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue: Gilani
Rezaul H Laskar
Islamabad, Jun 9 (PTI) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza
Gilani Tuesday said his government was committed to a peaceful
resolution of the Kashmir issue and hoped India and Pakistan
will soon resume Composite Dialogue to make progress on the
matter.
During a meeting with Kashmir Centre executive
director Ghulam Nabi Fai, Gilani said his government "remained
committed to seek a peaceful resolution of long-festering
Kashmir dispute".
Pakistan was concerned at the "human rights
violations" in Kashmir and has been persistently calling for
the revocation of laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers
Act being used against the Kashmiris, an official statement
quoted Gilani as saying.
He said he hoped Pakistan and India "will soon resume
their composite dialogue process to make progress towards"
resolving the Kashmir issue.
Gilani noted that the "ongoing non-violent indigenous
movement" in Jammu and Kashmir that erupted last year
following a land dispute had drawn the "attention of the
international community as well as Indian intelligentsia for
an early resolution of this problem".
He said Pakistan will keep calling for the world
community's intervention and hopes they "would play a role in
prevention of abuse of rights of non-violent Kashmiris".
Gilani also appreciated Fai's role "in furthering the
cause of Kashmir".
India suspended the composite dialogue process in the
wake of last year's Mumbai terror attacks that were linked to
Pakistan-based elements, including the outlawed
Lashker-e-Taiba.
It has linked the resumption of the dialogue to
Pakistan taking action against the perpetrators of the
attacks. PTI RHL
