Qatar's NHRC Celebrates World Human Rights Day

Doha, December 13 (QNA) - The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) celebrated World Human Rights Day, which is observed every year on Dec. 10 - the day the UN General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). World Human Rights Day 2022 comes under the theme "Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All." On this occasion, HE Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah said that celebrating World Human Rights Day represents an exceptional event, both locally and internationally, in light of the international incidents making the world a global village. Her Excellency added that this year's World Human Rights Day comes days after commemorating 20 years of establishing the NHRC amidst the State of Qatar's big strides toward protecting human rights, its relentless endeavor to establish a state of law and human rights, and its aspiration to achieve more dignity, freedom, justice, and equality for every human living on its soil. Her Excellency indicated that this year's World Human Rights Day comes amid the State of Qatar hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 with millions of multicultural and multilingual fans gathered together in respect, giving this year's World Human Rights day more momentum making these people united under the human rights umbrella that encompasses everyone. Her Excellency stressed that this global sporting event, being held for the first time in the Arab and Islamic region, besides the event's humane nature and its concision with the occasion of World Human Rights Day, constitutes an opportunity to renew the firm commitment toward the human rights, its universality, and inclusivity as the pillars of the world where peace, development, tolerance, and respect for diversity and difference prevail. Her Excellency also reiterated the NHRC's rejection of the false and misleading systematic malicious campaigns with the continued success of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Her Excellency added that these campaigns contradict the reality and atmosphere experienced by the fans on the ground and contradict the statements of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and European Union officials who visited Qatar and witnessed the truth. HE Al Attiyah renewed her call to international human rights organizations, including UN Special Rapporteurs and world parliament representatives, to witness the facts with transparency. Her Excellency noted the State of Qatar's welcome to UN or European missions, adding that all the UN and EU missions that visited Qatar praised the legislative advancement describing them as unprecedented. Her Excellency said that some European delegations stated that Qatar's respect for human rights exceeds what they see in their European countries, adding that some European parliament representatives admitted that their countries do not have the same respect for human rights as what they witnessed in the State of Qatar. HE Al Attiyah added that during the past decade, the State of Qatar expanded its international commitments ratifying seven out of nine basic international protocols and conventions related to protecting and promoting human rights, which led to the accelerated steps to amend and develop the national legislation to be in line with international commitments. Globally, HE Al Attiyah noted the efforts exerted by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) within the context of unifying efforts to work as a team to promote human rights all over the world, building communication bridges, exchanging information and expertise among members and partners, activating the role of national institutions, and encouraging governments to ratify international human rights conventions.
