UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL OKS OUTCOMES OF UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW ON AZERBAIJAN
Baku, June 12 (AzerTAc). The 11th session of the UN Human Rights Council has adopted the outcomes of the Universal Periodic Review on Azerbaijan.
The delegation of Azerbaijan led by Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov included Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, the head of the Azerbaijan mission in other international organizations Elchin Amirbeyhov, chief of the Foreign Ministry`s department for international law and contracts Murad Nacafbeyli.
Khalafov presented Azerbaijani side`s comments on the recommendations concerning Azerbaijan Government`s report on Universal Periodic Review mechanism.
Deputy Minister told of the legal basis created in Azerbaijan to ensure human rights and freedoms. He stressed the importance of constitutional reforms carried out on March 18 for strengthening and promotion of human rights. Khalafov also told of the improvement of legislation and its implementation as well as judicial reforms.
He provided information about the promotion of rights of women, children, foreigners, gender equality, fight against human trafficking as well as programs and projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
Khalafov also touched upon socio-economic development rates in Azerbaijan and protection of economic and social rights.
He underscored the actions Azerbaijan government has taken to improve social conditions of refugees and IDPs.
With regard to recommendations concerning Azerbaijan Government`s report on Universal Periodic Review mechanism, representatives of other countries praised Azerbaijan`s successful economic, penitentiary reforms, fight against human trafficking as well as accomplishments in ensuring gender equality, human rights.
