Yemen says new al-Qaeda ring dismantled
SANA'A, June 15 (Saba) – Few days after the arrest of what was the
biggest financier of al-Qaeda in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, Yemen said
it had broken up an al-Qaeda ring whose members were operating in
Sana'a and Mareb provinces.
A security source said the cell had planned to carry out fresh
terrorist attacks and that it was responsible for previous attacks
in Yemen.
However, the source, who declined to be named because he was not
authorized to speak to the media, did not disclose the number of the
ring members or what their nationalities are.
The announcement comes a day after Yemen announced the arrest of the
main financier of al-Qaeda in Yemen and neighboring Saudi Arabia.
Investigations with Hassan Hussein Bin Alwan, a Saudi national, have
led to the dismantling of the ring, the source added.
On Sunday, Yemen announced the arrest of a senior al-Qaeda fugitive
who was the man responsible for arranging funds for al-Qaeda
operations in the two countries.
Bin Alwan was arrested in Mareb province, 160 km east of Yemen's
capital of Sana'a, on Friday.
A massive hunt has been launched for fugitives and terrorists, and
since the Interior Ministry of Yemen circulated a list of 152 wanted
fugitives including 90 Saudis in the country early this year,
several al-Qaeda cells have been broken up.
A number of people including Arabs went on trials on terrorism
charges, with some trials still under process.
