SEOUL, June 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. grabbed the top
spot in the global market for touchscreen mobile phones in the first quarter of
this year, a market researcher said Tuesday.
According to Boston-based Strategy Analytic (SA), Samsung secured a 23.9 percent
market share, selling 6.1 million touchscreen mobile phone units worldwide during
the period.
LG Electronics Co., also a South Korean handset maker, took the No. 2 ranking
with a 20.8 percent market share. It sold 5.3 million touch screen units
worldwide.
Apple Inc., the maker of iPhone, placed third with a 14.9 percent market share
and sales of 3.8 million units. Finland's Nokia Corp., the world's largest
handset maker, was fourth with 11.4 percent and 2.9 million units.
The global market for high-end phones with touchscreens is expected to triple to
500 million units in 2012, compared with an anticipated 170 million units this
