Hyundai Motor's sales in Europe gain 25.1 pct in May

SEOUL, June 17 (Yonhap) -- Auto sales by Hyundai Motor Co. in the European market
rose 25.1 percent from a year ago in May, despite a year-long slump in the
region, according to industry data on Wednesday.

In Europe, Hyundai has benefited from the struggles of General Motors Corp. and
Chrysler LLC, the two U.S. auto giants that have been under bankruptcy protection
proceedings, analysts here said.
Hyundai sold 29,309 vehicles last month in the market, compared with 23,430 units
sold for the same period last year, the European Automobile Manufacturers
Association said.
Its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. also saw sales rise 1.1 percent to 21,924 units in
May.
Overall, auto sales in Europe fell 4.9 percent to 1.27 million units last month,
according to the data.
