Set of Hokusai's 36 Views of Mt. Fuji to Be Auctioned
It is very rare for the popular ukiyo-e series to be auctioned all at once. Christie's usually announces estimated prices for works, but an official of the company said it is impossible to imagine how much a set of the series will fetch.
According to Christie's, the seller is an American. The set of works by the Japanese Edo-era ukiyo-e artist is open to the public for a limited time at its building in New York. It is also very rare for all the works in the series to be exhibited in one place in the United States.
The state of preservation varies from work to work, but overall the works are in good condition, a Christie's official said.
In the ukiyo-e series, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is particularly highly valued. It sold for the winning bid of 2.76 million dollars at Christie's in March this year. In August, Germany's Bavarian State Library said it had bought the work from an individual for millions of euros.
The art of ukiyo-e was widely introduced to Europe at the 1867 Paris Exposition, where its bright colors and bold compositions made a big impression. It is said to have influenced the style of Impressionist painters such as Vincent van Gogh.
