Foreign Affairs Minister heads Bahrain delegation in opening session of UNGA 78

New York, Sept. 19 (BNA): Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, chaired the delegation of Bahrain during the opening session of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78).

 

The session, which was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, under the theme "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards Peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all", was chaired by the President of the current session of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis, and with the participation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

 

Dr. Mohammed Mubarak bin Daina, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, and Noor Ali Al Khulaif, Minister of Sustainable Development were present.

 

António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General delivered a speech in which he addressed global challenges, including the climate crisis, noting the consequences of floods and torrential rains that hit the State of Libya.

 

He stressed the importance of multilateral action through new global agreements on safeguarding biodiversity, protecting the high seas, climate loss, and damage, and on the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

 

Guterres emphasised the importance of human rights, the promotion of justice, and respect for international law, pointing to the rise of crises, coups, and chaos, noting that when countries do not respect the Charter of the United Nations and international law, they create a world of insecurity for all, referring to the situations in the African Sahel, Sudan, Congo, Afghanistan, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and Syria, calling for establishing peace.

 

Dennis Francis, President of the current session of the General Assembly also delivered a speech in which he noted that wars, climate change, debt, energy and food crises, poverty and famine directly affect the lives of people in various parts of the world, referring to the situation in Ukraine and its impact on food security and energy price instability.

 

He expressed his condolences and sympathy to Morocco and Libya following the floods and earthquakes that had hit them, causing suffering and deaths, calling on member states to acknowledge the escalating and continuing effects of climate change.
