Doha, October 29 (QNA) - Qatari newspapers highlighted in their editorials Sunday Qatar's continued diplomatic efforts and its humanitarian assistance to address the deteriorating situation in Gaza Strip; noting the visit of HE Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres to Doha, and his praise and appreciation for Qatar's tireless efforts and initiatives.
In this context, the Qatari dailies pointed to the statement made by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani before the UN General Assembly tenth emergency session, which emphasized that the deteriorating humanitarian situations in Gaza Strip have become catastrophic due to the Israeli attacks against innocent civilians, portending a dangerous descent that poses a threat to the security of the region and the world, and engenders grave consequences on the regional and international security and peace.
Under the headline "International Gratitude for Qatari Mediation Efforts", Al-Sharq said that the visit of HE Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres to Doha, and his praise of the Qatari efforts, and gratitude and appreciation for the tireless Qatari mediation initiatives, especially for the release of the hostages held in Gaza, affirmed the importance of the Qatari contributions to peace and humanitarian support for the benefit of the people; adding that this international praise refutes skepticism about Qatari aid and negotiations.
The referred to the State of Qatar's demand for an urgent international community action to respond to the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly calling for a humanitarian truce in Gaza Strip; stressing the importance of coordinating international and regional efforts in order to stop the aggression against Gaza, and to work hard to achieve just and comprehensive peace.
The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza requires consensus and unity of the international community regarding the justice of the Palestinian issue, and working to reach a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with the Arab Initiative and the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent State of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the Palestinian people’s enjoyment of their inalienable rights, Al-Sharq stressed.
The State of Qatar continues to contribute to the ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a solution that would end the bloodshed of the Palestinians, ensure a sustainable political solution in accordance with known references, and avoid the region more chaos and violence, Al-Sharq concluded.

The Israeli occupation forces have continued their unprecedented, persistent and aggressive air, land and sea bombardment throughout Gaza Strip amid a complete blackout of telephone and Internet networks. The criminal killing machine follows a policy of forced displacement of Palestinians residing in the Strip - in clear violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention - through mass killing of defenseless civilians and massive destruction to homes and infrastructure, Al-Watan said.
In conclusion, Al-Watan called for an immediate ceasefire, an end to the occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and more effort and joint Arab action that would create a mechanism for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza Strip; stressing the necessity of preserving the Palestinians' right to life.
In the same context, Al-Raya newspaper said in its editorial that as part of its ongoing efforts, which support international endeavors to reach a ceasefire agreement to halt the escalation in the Gaza Strip, and in the context of its continuous solidarity with the Palestinian people and condemnation of Israeli ongoing attacks and aggression on the Strip and continuous Israeli violations including killing innocent civilians and committing massacres, as well as its reaffirmation of its firm stance on the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the establishment of their independent state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the State of Qatar's endeavors to stop the ongoing Israeli escalation in Gaza that have continued for 22 days.
The newspaper also emphasized the State of Qatar's call for the international community to swiftly respond to the United Nations General Assembly's resolution for an immediate humanitarian truce in Gaza. The General Assembly adopted a resolution on Friday calling for an immediate and sustainable humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
In conclusion, Al-RAya said that the State of Qatar reiterated its firm position in condemning all forms of targeting civilians and practicing the policy of collective punishment, stressing that the State of Qatar has also stressed its complete rejection of the indiscriminate bombing of the Gaza Strip and attempts to forcibly displace its besieged people, and has warned of the danger of a ground escalation of this war on the safety of civilians and hostages in Gaza. The State of Qatar also called for the necessity of continuing the entry of relief convoys and humanitarian aid to the Palestinians stranded under the bombing. It also stressed the importance of coordinating international and regional efforts in order to stop the aggression against Gaza and work hard to achieve just and comprehensive peace.
English-language newspaper The Peninsula said that continuing its streak of hosting major sports events, FIFA World Cup 2022 host Qatar is gearing up to hold more mega events, as the start of the year 2024 will bring delight to fans worldwide.
Under the headline "Qatar blockbusters on the horizon", the paper said that Qatar is preparing to play host to the AFC Asian Cup and the World Aquatics Championships – the first ever edition of the global swimming spectacle to be held in the Middle East. Both the highly-anticipated events have already marked their 100-day countdowns with the Asian Cup, bringing together 24 teams for continent’s most prestigious title, set to take place from Jan. 12 and Feb. 10, 2024. The World Aquatics Championships will be held from Feb. 2 to 18, 2024 with 2600 elite swimmers representing 190 countries confirming their participation in the historic event.
Ticket sales for the Asian Cup, which Qatar is hosting for the third time after staging the 1988 and 2011 editions is receiving overwhelming response with more than 150,000 tickets – allocated in the first batch of sales – sold out within days, the paper said, adding that fans from host country Qatar, Saudi Arabia and India led the way globally in the opening stage and such was the interest that a total of 81,209 tickets were sold within the first 24-hours of launch of sales on Oct. 10.
Hosts Qatar will defend their title in the tournament featuring 51 matches to be played across nine stadiums. The home side will open the event with a game against Lebanon at the iconic Lusail Stadium, with a capacity of approximately 88,000 spectators. Like the FIFA World Cup, fans will be able to stay in one venue throughout the tournament due to Qatar’s compact nature with the farthest distance between any two stadiums is 75kms, the paper pointe out.
The paper noted that the World Aquatics Championships will see swimmers competing for 75 medal events in six aquatic sports – swimming, diving, water polo, artistic swimming, open water swimming and high diving – in Doha with Aspire Dome, Hamad Aquatic Centre and Old Doha Port being the venues. The ticket sale for the Championships is underway with the opening ceremony scheduled for Feb. 4, 2024 at the Aspire Dome.
