Qatar University Hosts Conference on "The Family in the Gulf: Continuity and Change"

Doha, November 19 (QNA) - Qatar University (QU)'s College of Arts and Sciences hosted the Eighth Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference themed "The Family in the Gulf: Continuity and Change," in collaboration with the Gulf Studies Center at QU and the Doha International Family Institute. The conference is set to span two days, focusing on illuminating the significant evolutions influencing the fabric and dynamics of family life across the region. It focuses on the institution of the family in the Arab Gulf countries, and interest in this family is increasing alongside the challenges facing Gulf society due to global openness through the communications revolution. Emphasizing the importance of understanding evolving family structures, Vice President for Academic Affairs at QU Prof. Ibrahim Al Kaabi asserted, "This annual gathering is dedicated to examining the pivotal subject of continuity and change within Gulf families. The constitutions of Gulf Council countries uphold the family as the fundamental cornerstone of society. However, the rapid pace of global changes challenges traditional family structures, influencing various aspects of life, including politics, economy, education, culture, and blood relations." Dr. Al Kaabi continued, "The contemporary Gulf society faces external challenges and pressures. Despite this, Gulf families continue to uphold customs and traditions, adhering steadfastly to tribal values. Understanding the nuances of changing family structures and relationships, along with the continuity and inheritance of traditional values from one generation to another, is essential. The family symbolizes stability, and its significance in Gulf societies is paramount." Dr. Al Kaabi further stressed the significance of preserving customs amidst change: "Despite the evolving global landscape, Gulf families remain a fundamental unit influencing various aspects of life. This conference aims to illuminate these complexities and foster dialogue among researchers and specialists." Director of the Gulf Studies Center at QU's College of Arts and Science Prof. Mahjoob Zweiri highlighted the conference's significance: "The eighth edition of the Gulf Studies Center conference at QU focuses on a highly important topic: the institution of the family in the Arab Gulf countries. Interest in this family is increasing alongside the challenges facing Gulf society due to global openness through the communications revolution. "The conference focuses on issues concerning the Gulf family. Experts and academics from Gulf countries and abroad participate in the conference, and the conference papers will be published in a book documenting the discussions and transferring knowledge to future generations." Khaled Al Naama from Doha International Family Institute emphasized the conference's interdisciplinary approach: "This initiative comprehends the factors driving change within Gulf families by integrating research from diverse fields. By analyzing technology, social media, health, arts, sports, and policy-making challenges, the conference seeks to understand Gulf families' continuity and change within the GCC context."
