NORWAY HOSTS 29TH CoE CONFERENCE OF JUSTICE MINISTERS

Baku, June 22 (AzerTAc). The 29th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers of Justice was held in Tromsø, Norway on June 17-19.
The conference entitled “Breaking the silence - United against domestic violence” brought together representatives from more than 40 countries, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro and others.
The participants discussed ways to combat domestic violence by identifying the problems and developing and promoting a common approach to breaking the silence, and supporting and empowering the victims.
Addressing the conference, Azerbaijan`s Justice Minister Fikrat Mammadov told of the state policy in his country to fight against domestic violence, to increase women`s role in society and to eliminate discrimination against women.
The Minister noted his country adopted a National Action Plan (NAP) on Protection of Human Rights which envisages strengthening fight against domestic violence and “Complex Program of the Republic on combating domestic violence in democratic society”.
He also said in the wake of the Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan about one million people became refugees and IDPs, and 250 families face social, spiritual and domestic problems.
He also made some proposals on strengthening fight against domestic violence.
The conference adopted 3 resolutions on strengthening the fight against domestic violence, the rule of law and increasing the effectiveness of international legal aid.
On the sidelines of the conference, Fikrat Mammadov met with CoE Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, European Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as his counterparts from Turkey, the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and other countries to exchange views on prospects for cooperation.
