Dubai, Dec. 6 (BNA): A Bahraini delegation, led by Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, Speaker of the Council of Representatives, and Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh, Shura Council Chairman, participated in an international Parliamentary Meeting, held today at Expo City Dubai.

Co-organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPA) and the UAE National Federal Council (FNC), the meeting was held on the sidelines of the 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).

Saqr Ghobash, UAE’s FNC Speaker Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, COP28 President, and Simon Stiell of Grenada, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), delivered speeches during the opening ceremony. They emphasised the importance of strengthening the role of international parliamentary action to address climate change effects and implement the Paris Agreement.

The kingdom is participating in the international parliamentary meeting to consolidate the role of its parliamentary diplomacy in highlighting the national and legislative efforts, as well as programmes, projects and initiatives to confront climate change challenges and strengthen environmental security, under the comprehensive development process, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The COP28 Parliamentary Meeting featured remarks by heads of legislative councils and parliaments, as well as panel discussions on “Scientific Insights, Global Progress and the Call for Enhanced Ambition”, "Parliamentary Oversight of the Paris Agreement Implementation Post-COP28", "Beyond Mitigation and Adaptation: Operationalising Loss and Damage" and "Climate Action Spotlight: Leadership of Women Parliamentarians and Young Parliamentarians".

The meeting also focused on joining the IPU’s campaign, themed “Parliaments for the Planet in 2023”, aiming to mobilise parliaments and parliamentarians to accelerate action on the climate emergency.
