Doha, December 06 (QNA) - The Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced today the appointment of the Spanish Marquez Lopez as head coach of the Qatari first football team as a successor to the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz.
The QFA confirmed, in an official statement, hiring Marquez Lopez, previously coach of Al-Wakrah, as the new coach of the first national team instead of his Portuguese predecessor Queiroz.
The statement added that the new coach will head the club in the Asian Cup held in Doha between January 10 and February 10.
The QFA expressed its gratitude to the board of directors of Al-Wakrah club for their cooperation and consent for hiring Lopez to train the team during the next period.
The association also declared today the termination of previous coach Queiroz's contract by mutual consent.
This latter was the coach of the Qatari national team since last February, and led it officially in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States in the previous June and July, before being eliminated in the quarter-final.
He also led the Qatari team to the first two rounds of the joint qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup, as it defeated the Afghani team in Doha 8-1 and the Indian 3-0 as part of the first round competitions, which also joined the Kuwati team. (QNA)
