India hopes for sympathatic view by Pak govt on Sarabjit

New Delhi, Jun 24 (PTI) India Wednesday hoped Pakistan
government will take a "sympathatic and humanitarian" view in
the case of Sarabjit Singh whose review petition on death
sentence for alleged involvement in bomb attacks in 1990 was
dismissed by Pakistan's Supreme Court.

"I have seen the reports....We are not, however, aware
of the details of the judgment. Sarabjeet Singh's case has
touched sentiments of many people in India who have been
following this case.

"We have consistently urged the government of Pakistan
to take a sympathatic and humanitarian view in the case,"
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told reporters when
asked about the apex court's judgment upholding the death
sentence to Sarabjit.

The Minister said "it is our hope that they (Pakistan
government) will find it possible to do so".

Sarabjit has been on death row since he was convicted
for alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in 1990 that
killed 14 people.

Sarabjit was set to be hanged on April one last year
though Pakistani authorities put off his execution
indefinitely after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
intervened in the matter.

The sole hope left for Sarabjit is a pardon by Pakistan
President Asif Ali Zardari. PTI PYK
