US NSA Jones meets Narayanan, discusses situation in Af-Pak
New Delhi, Jun 25 (PTI) United States National Security
Adviser James Jones met his Indian counterpart M K Narayanan
here in India's national capital Thursday evening and is
understood to have shared with him assessment of the situation
in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Jones, who arrived here Thursday evening after a tour of
Afghanistan and Pakistan, met Narayanan at his South Block
office here.
His visit comes ahead of the visit of US Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton to India next month.
Jones is believed to have shared his assessment about the
situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan where massive military
operations are on against the Taliban militia.
He is expected to call on Defence Minister A K Antony
Friday and also meet top diplomats.
This is the first high-level visit by an US official
after India and Pakistan agreed to discuss the steps taken by
the government in Islamabad against terrorism directed against
New Delhi.
In Islamabad, Jones met Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq
Kayani and is understood to have taken stock of the ongoing
military operations against the Taliban in northwest Pakistan
and discussed American troop surge in Afghanistan.
Jones was briefed Wednesday night by Kayani on the
offensive against the Taliban in Malakand and Swat, which the
military says is in its final stage. PTI SKU
