Group of OIC Ambassadors to United Nations Holds Meeting in New York

Jeddah, March 29, 2024, SPA -- The group of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) permanent representatives to the United Nations held a meeting Wednesday in New York City, chaired by Mauritania's representative, Sidi Mohamed Laghdaf.
The meeting was held after the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2728 on March 25.
The group considered the council’s adoption of the resolution to be a historic measure and a remarkable transformation aimed at securing a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and putting an end to the ongoing civilian toll and the humanitarian catastrophe the Palestinians in the enclave face as a result of Israeli aggression.
The group hailed the adoption of the Security Council’s resolution and called on the international community and members of the council to ensure its speedy implementation. The permanent representatives expressed their satisfaction with the increasing cooperation between the groups of member states of the OIC, the League of Arab States, and the Non-Aligned Movement.
Participants discussed the mechanisms for implementing the decision of the joint extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit regarding Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, which was held in Riyadh on November 11, 2023, as well as the decision of the special session of the foreign ministers’ meeting held in Jeddah on March 5, 2024, with special reference to expanding international recognition of the state of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. OIC group members stressed firm commitment to intensifying consultations to achieve this goal, including opening communication channels with relevant members of the international community and the heads of the main organs of the United Nations.
The meeting also hailed the efforts of the ministerial committee formed by the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit, chaired by the Kingdom, regarding implementing the summit’s decision, especially with regard to granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations in preparation for realizing the two-state solution. They stressed that the meeting committed itself to working to achieve these goals as soon as possible.
