Police failed to tackle Kandhamal violence: Chidambaram

Bhubaneshwar, Jun 26 (PTI) The Centre on Friday hit out
at the government of India's wasetrn state of Orissa for the
"failure" to contain the "regrettable and condemnable"
Kandhamal violence for over a month since it erupted in August
last year.

"What happened on August 23 and thereafter was
regrettable and condemnable. Moresoever, it was the failure of
the police for 30 to 40 days," Home Minister P Chidambaram
told reporters after meeting Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Chidambaram, who is on a two-day visit to the state,
said the situation in the riot-torn district was returning to
normal.

"Now the situation is returning to normal but we cannot
lower our guards," he said.

About increasing activities of naxals in the state,
Chidambaram said, "our response to Left wing extremism is that
there is no room for violence.

"The CPI-Maoist was and is a terrorist organisation and
we will not yield any ground to CPI-Maoist. We will resolutely
oppose and ensure that all violence ends".

The Home Minister said he has assured the Chief Minister
of all help to tackle Maoists in the state.

"I have assured Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of all
help. A plan has been drawn up to handle Left wing extremism,"
he said.

Chidambaram, who visited Maoist-affected Koraput and
Kandhamal before meeting the Chief Minister here, said, "The
Centre and the state affected by Left Wing extremism will not
rest until the last naxal is brought to book."

Ahead of the Home Minister's visit, Maoists had struck
in a big way in Koraput district by attacking a railway
station, damaging communication towers and looting a block
office hours before his arrival.

Chidambaram accepted that the naxal problem was
neglected for the last 10 years.

"It will be tackled, though it may take some time. I
have offered my hand and we shall move once the state
governments are fully prepared," he said before wrapping up
his visit.

Koraput district has been witnessing large scale naxal
violence recently. The Maoists had cut off all road links to
Narayanpatna block in the district since June 15 by felling
trees.

About 400 security personnel, including Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF) jawans, have remained cut off in the block
and helicopters were used to airlift food and additional
forces. PTI
