Abdullah bin Zayed hails the international support for selecting Abu Dhabi as IRENA headquarters
Sharm Al Shaikh - June 30, 2009 (WAM) - UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed deep gratitude and appreciation to all those countries who participated in the second session yesterday of the Preparatory Commission of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) which voted Abu Dhabi to be the headquarters of IRENA after Germany and Austria withdrew from the race.
UAE becomes the first developing nation to host headquarters of an international agency in its land. Sheikh Abdullah hailed the stance taken by Germany and Austria and their support to the initiative of Abu Dhabi to host the IRENA headquarters. Though the contest was powerful and intensive, it was characterised by fairness and transparency, he noted.
Sheikh Abdullah reiterated UAE's commitment to give full support to the Agency enabling it to carry out its mission of supporting all countries in the area of the application of renewable energy and helping them to benefit from the effective development through all means including transfer of knowledge, technology and experience.
Sheikh Abdullah headed the UAE delegation to the Preparatory Commission, which is being attended by delegates representing 115 countries in addition to a large number of world renowned personalities and international organisations working in the field of the renewable energy. The session will resume today to elect IRENA's Director General.
Germany and Austria had made their bids to host the IRENA headquarters, but withdrew from the contest today allowing UAE to win the position.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was officially established in Bonn on 26 January 2009. Up-to-date, 114 States have signed the Statute of the Agency, amongst them 40 African, 34 European, 29 Asian and 11 Latin-American countries.
Mandated by these governments worldwide, IRENA aspires to become the main driving force for promoting a rapid transition towards the widespread and sustainable use of renewable energy on a global scale.
As the global voice for renewable energies, IRENA envisages providing practical advice and support for both industrialised and developing countries, thereby helping to improve frameworks and build capacity.
Moreover, the Agency intends to facilitate access to all relevant information, including reliable data on the potentials for renewable energy, best practices, effective financial mechanisms, and state-of-the-art technological expertise.
