What is the progress in Aarushi murder case? SC asks CBI
New Delhi, July 7 (PTI) The sensational Aarushi murder
case which captured the imagination of the nation was back in
the limelight Tuesday with the Supreme court of India asking
the CBI what was the "progess" in investigation into the twin
murder 14 months back.
"What has happened to the case? What is the progress?," a
bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph asked during
the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for a slew
of directions on the issue.
During the hearing, the Centre told the Court that it
would submit a status report on the progress in the
investigation in the twin murder of teenager Aarushi and her
domestic help Hemraj on May 16, 2008.
The assurance was given by Solicitor General Gopal
Subramaniam after the Bench enquired about the progrees.
Interestingly, neither Surat Singh, an advocate who
filed the PIL, nor the counsel for Rajesh Talwar--father of
Aarushi, who had moved an impleadment application could answer
the court's query on the issue.
It was then that the Solicitor General, who is appearing
for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), assured the bench
that the government would file a status report on the issue.
The apex court said its July 22, 2008 order directing the
media to exercise caution in reporting or telecasting matters
relating to the case would continue until further orders.
Surat Singh, in his PIL, sought directions to protect the
reputation of the family which he alleges has been much
maligned by the media and the police and also action against
the police for keeping Dr Talwar in custody for 50 days before
declaring him innocent. PTI RB
