AZERBAIJAN CELEBRATES 90th ANNIVERSARY OF DIPLOMATIC SERVICE
Baku, July 9 (AzerTAc). A solemn ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Azerbaijan`s diplomatic service has today been held here bringing together a large number of state and government officials, including ministers, MPs, the country`s ambassadors abroad and representatives of the diplomatic corps in Baku.
The event was opened by Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov who said the history of diplomatic service in the country dates back to 1919 “when on July 19 a decision to set up the secretariat of the Foreign Ministry of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was made”.
Mammadyarov praised nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev`s role in developing the diplomatic service in Azerbaijan.
“And it is the nationwide leader`s foreign policy strategy that allowed Azerbaijan to strengthen its image becoming the regional leader.”
“This policy is today being successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev,” said the minister.
“On August 24, 2007 President Ilham Aliyev signed an order declaring July 9 the professional holiday of diplomats in Azerbaijan.”
“It proves how much importance the President places on Azerbaijan`s diplomacy and, at the same time, its diplomats,” added Mammadyarov.
Nikolae Ureke, Romanian Ambassador in Baku, congratulated Azerbaijan`s officials on behalf of foreign diplomats.
“The number of foreign diplomats is increasingly growing in Azerbaijan, and it demonstrates the country`s strengthening international image,” said Ureke.
Elman Arasly, Azerbaijan`s Ambassador to Jordan, praised nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev`s and President Ilham Aliyev`s contributions to “Azerbaijan`s successes both in domestic and foreign policy”.
