Washington, Jul 11 (PTI) The US Senate has unanimously
confirmed the nomination of Tim J Roemer as the next US envoy
to India to facilitate him to take charge well before
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's New Delhi visit later
this month.

The confirmation was made by the Senate Friday
after lawmakers approved Roemer's nomination by unanimous
consent.

A former US lawmaker from Indiana and a member of the
9/11 Commission, 53-year-old Roemer is currently head of
Washington-based think tank Center for National Policy (CNP).

Roemer had testified before the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee on Wednesday, which confirmed his
nomination the following day.

The Senate accelerated his nomination process so
that he could be in New Delhi before Clinton's proposed
visit to India.

The nomination of Roemer, who is expected to leave for
New Delhi soon, as the US Ambassador to India was officially
announced by the White House on May 28 and sent to the Senate
on June 11.

Roemer is considered close to President Barack Obama
and was among the first few Democrats to support his run for
US Presidency.

Before joining CNP, Roemer represented the 3rd
District of Indiana as a Congressman from 1991 to 2003 and was
appointed by former President George W Bush as a member of the
9/11 Commission.

He was appointed to the Commission on the Prevention
of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Proliferation and Terrorism, a
bi-partisan commission created by Congress to examine how the
US can best address this threat to national security.

In addition, he serves on the Washington Institute for
Near East Policy's Presidential Task Force on Combating the
Ideology of Radical Extremism, and the National Parks Second
Century Commission.

As a Distinguished Scholar at the Mercatus Center at
George Mason University, Roemer works with Members of the
Congress and staff to improve public policy outcomes by
teaching on the legislative branch and policy analysis.

Roemer holds a BA from the University of California,
San Diego and an MA and PhD from the University of Notre Dame.
