Rajasekhara Reddy inaugurates port

Visakhapatnam, July 12 (PTI) State Chief Minister Y S
Rajasekhara Reddy formally inaugurated the ultra-modern
deepest port in the country at Gangavaram near Visakhapatnam,
here in the South-eastern state of Andhra Pradesh, Sunday.

The Rs 1,800 crore port, which can handle bulk cargo
vessels of up to 2 lakh DWT (dead weight tonnage), was built
under public-private partnership.

Speaking on the occasion, Reddy said at least one port
could be developed in all the nine coastal districts of Andhra
Pradesh to spur economic growth and generate employment.

While the Krishnapatnam port has become operational in
Nellore district, ports were coming up in Prakasam, Guntur and
Krishna districts, he said.

With the opening of a second port at Visakhapatnam, the
economy of the region would get a major boost, he said.

With the government of India identifying the coastal area
along Visakhapatnam as a petro-chemical corridor, many
industries would come up in the region, Reddy added.

Union Minister of State for HRD D Purandeshwari, state
ministers K Lakshminarayana, B Satyanarayana, P Balaraju, Port
Chairman DVS Raju and others attended the function. PTI DBV
