Acacia Nilotica Flourishes in Najran, Revives Environment and Economy

Najran, August 01, 2025, SPA -- The Acacia nilotica plant, a vital part of Najran’s environment and daily life, serves multiple purposes in health, food, construction, and livestock grazing while holding significant environmental and economic value by helping to combat desertification and support the local economy.
Resistant to drought and salinity, Acacia nilotica grows in Najran’s Badr Al-Janoub Governorate and along the Sarawat Mountains. It grows to a height of 5 to 8 meters and blooms fragrant yellow flowers from late summer to mid-fall.
The Green Najran Association has actively worked to increase the number of these trees, having planted over 125,000 in the past eight years. The goal is to reach 200,000 trees by 2030, a mission supported through collaboration with government and civil authorities.
Beekeeper Majid Al-Salem highlighted the tree’s ancient health and industrial benefits, emphasizing its importance for producing high-quality honey. During the flowering season, beekeepers flock to areas with Acacia nilotica trees, where a kilogram of the highly sought-after honey can sell for SAR400.
The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification is committed to these efforts, which align with Saudi Vision 2030 goals to improve quality of life and ensure the sustainable use of the Kingdom’s resources.
