Chile Leverages Astronomy to Deepen Educational and Scientific Ties with Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Chile is turning to astronomy to strengthen cooperation with Malaysia in education and science.

Its Ambassador to Kuala Lumpur Jaime Munoz Sandoval said Chile is recognised as the world’s astronomy capital, hosting more than half of the planet’s astronomical capacity.

Citing Thursday’s special screening of the documentary ‘Big Astronomy: People, Places, Discoveries’ at Planetarium Negara (National Planetarium) for students and teachers from four Kuala Lumpur schools, he said the country’s world-class observatories and expertise can inspire young Malaysians.

“Due to the incredible telescopes located in the north of Chile, it is often said that Chile is the world’s eyes to the universe. Renowned researchers are using them to observe and answer the questions of the future.

“We invite you to learn about some of them,” he said when delivering his opening remarks at the screening, organised in collaboration with Planetarium Negara and attended by 176 students aged 13 to 16.

Munoz Sandoval said the documentary highlights the work of astronomers, scientists and professionals who operate some of the world’s most advanced observatories.

“The film, designed especially for planetariums, aims to spark interest in science, astronomy and international collaboration among young audiences, while also providing educators with new tools to support their teaching,” he said.

Also present were the Peruvian Ambassador to Malaysia and Dean of the Latin American and Caribbean Diplomatic Group, Ricardo Morote; Mexican Ambassador to Malaysia, Luis Javier Campuzano; Argentine Ambassador to Malaysia, Marta Laura Gabrieloni; Cuban Ambassador to Malaysia, Yadira Ledezma and Director of Planetarium Negara, Mohd Zamri Shah Mastor.

Diplomatic relations between Chile and Malaysia were formally established on 22 May 1979, marking the beginning of official bilateral ties and subsequently opened their embassies.

Chile opened one in Kuala Lumpur in 1989.
