Mercy Malaysia Mobilises Emergency Aid For Afghanistan Quake Victims

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- MERCY Malaysia has activated its emergency response to provide trauma care, essential medical kits and psychosocial support for those affected by the 6.0-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan last Sunday.

The organisation said its Rapid Assessment Team is coordinating with partners on the ground through its established health facilities, including the Hisar Shahi Community Health Centre in Nangarhar and the Malalai Maternity Hospital in Kabul.

“Preparations are also underway for the deployment of an emergency medical team to provide trauma care, essential medical kits and psychosocial support,” it said in a statement on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, MERCY Malaysia's president Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, in the same statement, stressed the importance of both immediate response and long-term resilience.

“Beyond the urgent medical and humanitarian needs, the earthquake reminds us that preparedness and resilience are not optional but essential.

“The international community must act with urgency to deliver relief today, while investing in systems that protect lives and livelihoods from tomorrow’s shocks,” he said.

He added that MERCY Malaysia remains committed not only to emergency response, but also to supporting recovery and resilience through the Humanitarian-Development Nexus, in partnership with local communities.

At the same time, MERCY Malaysia called on the public, private sector and international partners to support its relief efforts, which will enable the delivery of emergency medical aid, shelter, food, clean water and sanitation, mental health and psychosocial support, as well as disaster risk reduction initiatives.

According to reports, more than 800 people have been killed and 2,000 injured after the devastating earthquake flattened villages in Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman, triggering landslides that cut off remote communities and hampered rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, floods in neighbouring Pakistan have worsened the regional humanitarian crisis, making international aid and helicopter support essential to reach those in need.
