Economic crisis, terrorism to top agenda of NAM Summit

Sharm el-Sheikh, Jul 14 (PTI) Global economic slowdown
and terrorism are expected to dominate the NAM Summit here
Wednesday that will be attended by Indian Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh amid the country's keenness to help the
grouping regain "moral high ground" to address issues that
affect developing nations.

At the two-day 15th NAM Summit, the grouping of 118
developing nations will discuss ways to address challenges
posed by the economic crisis and pitch for reform of the
global financial institutions like IMF and World Bank.

Singh is expected to pitch for both short-term and
long-term measures to bring about economic recovery.

He is also likely to underline the obligation of the
developed nations to reverse the decrease in flow of capital
to developing world, which is bearing the brunt of the problem
that originated somewhere else.

Ahead of the Summit, the Indian Prime Minister noted that
the diversity and universality of the NAM offered the grouping
a unique opportunity to address present day challenges.

"India will play its part in helping NAM to regain its
moral high ground to address issues which are of direct
concern and relevance to developing countries," he said.

New Delhi underlines that NAM has "continuing relevance"
as the principles it seeks can be applied to address the
present day challenges as well.

Singh said non-alignment has been the bedrock of India's
foreign policy since it was enunciated by late Prime Minister
Jawaharlal Nehru.

"Non-alignment remains an article of faith for us," he
said, adding in the post-Cold War era, when the world was no
longer divided into two military blocs, the NAM has a renewed
role to play in the emerging world order.

The NAM will also discuss other challenges like
terrorism, climate change, sustainable development, food
security and energy security.

On terrorism, Singh is expected to pitch for close
coordination among the NAM nations and urge them to push the
resolution on International Convention on Terrorism which
India had moved at the United Nations.

For the first time, there will be an exclusive "First
Ladies' Summit" that will be addressed by the Prime Minister's
wife Gursharan Kaur.

The "NAM First Ladies' Summit" will have the theme
'Women in Crisis Management -- Perspectives and Challenges,
Best Practices and Lessons Learned'. PTI AKK
