Court turns down Kasab's plea for CD of CCTV footage

Mumbai, July 14 (PTI) A special court here in India's
financial capital Tuesday rejected the plea of Pakistani
terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab for a CD of CCTV footage showing
him and his slain accomplice Abu Ismael firing and throwing
grenades outside Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus.

Kasab had pleaded for a CD of the CCTV footage which
was exhibited as evidence into the 26/11 Mumbai terror
attacks.

Judge M L Tahaliyani asked Kasab as to why he wanted
the CD to which he did not give any answer.

The judge then asked Kasab whether he had a CD player
with him in the cell. As Kasab replied in the negative, the
court told him that no purpose would be served if he was given
the CD because he would not be able to see it.

Kasab's request for the CD came after special public
prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam made an application seeking permission
of the court to view the CCTV footage which captured Kasab and
Ismael firing from their AK-47 rifles and throwing hand
grenades from a foot-over-bridge outside CST before entering
Cama hospital.

The judge would give his ruling tomorrow on viewing
the film in the court.

Nikam said the film would corroborate the evidence of
eye witnesses on the crime allegedly perpetrated by Kasab and
his accomplice.

Kasab's lawyer Abbas Kazmi said no purpose would be
served as screening the film in the court would amount to
trial by the media.

In another development, Police Sub-Inspector Babasaheb
Desai, in his deposition as a witness, said he had conducted
a panchnama of the body of slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare.

Karkare had sustained eight bullet injuries. Three
bullets were retrieved from his body and sent to forensic
laboratory, the witness said adding he was present when the
postmortem was conducted.

Another witness, Babu Bhamkar, Sub-Inspector at Azad
Maidan police station, said he had conducted panchnama of two
victims killed in firing by terrorists. PTI SVS
