Floods Hit Northern Thailand

MAE HONG SON, Sept 30 (TNA) - Flash floods driven by heavy rain from the remnants of Tropical Depression Bualoi have caused severe damage across northern and northeastern Thailand.

Although Bualoi has been downgraded to a strong low-pressure area, it continues to deliver torrential rain, leading to rapidly rising water and strong currents.

In Mae Hong Son’s Mae Sariang district, a local warning station remained on red alert after all-night rain triggered flash floods. Water levels reached metres, flooding homes and washing away a village bridge, in what locals called the worst flood in two decades.

In the central-northern province of Uttaradit, mountain runoff caused the Huay Lark stream to burst its banks, flooding homes across four districts. Authorities evacuated vulnerable residents as floodwaters expanded and cut off some roads.

The Thai Meteorological Department warned that northern and upper northeastern regions must remain vigilant for accumulated rainfall, overflows, and flash floods over the next one to two days. A total of 36 provinces across the North, Northeast, Central, East, and South are designated as high-risk areas. -819 (TNA)
