ASEAN Summit: New Japan, Thailand PMs Among Leaders Arriving Saturday
SEPANG (Selangor, Malaysia), Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Newly elected Prime Ministers, Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand and Sanae Takaichi of Japan, are among leaders arriving Saturday ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits slated to take place here over the weekend.
Other leaders expected to touch down are President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr of the Philippines, Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone of Laos and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore.
European Council President Antonio Costa and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are also expected later on Saturday.
On Friday, world leaders began arriving in Malaysia for the summit, which will be held from Oct 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Among those who arrived was Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, whose aircraft landed at the Bunga Raya Complex of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 11.15 pm.
He will lead the Chinese delegation at the summit and co-chair the fifth round of high-level trade talks with the United States delegation led by Trade Representative Jamieson Greer this weekend.
South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa also arrived late Friday for a four-day official visit at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and to attend the summit as the Guest of the Chair.
His aircraft touched down at KLIA at about 11 pm, where he was received by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang.
Ramaphosa later inspected a guard of honour mounted by the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.
Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta arrived earlier at 6.30 pm, followed by Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao at 12.30 pm, ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn at 6.57 pm, and Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen at 10.20 pm.
The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are bringing together leaders from 10 ASEAN member states and dialogue partners, including the United States, China, Japan and India.
Under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, the summit is set to be one of the largest in ASEAN’s history, serving as a crucial platform to deepen regional collaboration and address global challenges cohesively and inclusively.
