Malaysia Calls For Immediate End To Violence, Protection Of Civilians In Sudan - Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has called for an immediate cessation of violence and for the protection of civilians in full accordance with international humanitarian law, amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in El Fasher and across Darfur, Sudan.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he is deeply alarmed by the unfolding tragedy, describing it as a humanitarian catastrophe marked by mass killings, starvation and displacement on a scale that shocks the conscience.

“Reports of atrocities that may amount to crimes against humanity, even genocide, are intolerable. Malaysia calls for an immediate cessation of violence and for the protection of civilians in full accordance with international humanitarian law,” he said in a posting on Facebook today.

Anwar stressed that Malaysia stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and urged the international community to act decisively to prevent further suffering, restore humanitarian access and support a credible process toward peace and accountability.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced Sunday that 1,205 people were displaced from the cities of Bara and Umm Ruwaba in North Kordofan state, while another 360 fled from Al-Abbasiya and Delami in South Kordofan due to worsening insecurity, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

In a statement, the IOM said its teams operating under the Displacement Tracking Matrix programme estimated that out of those displaced from North Kordofan, 580 fled Bara and 625 left Umm Ruwaba.

It added that the displaced moved to various locations within North Kordofan and to several towns in White Nile state in southern Sudan.

Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in a war that regional and international mediations have failed to end.

The conflict has killed 20,000 people and displaced more than 15 million as refugees and internally displaced persons, according to UN and local reports.
