ASEAN Monitors Investigate Cambodian Mines on Thai Border

SI SA KET, Nov 18 (TNA) - A team of observers from the ASEAN Observer Team in Thailand (AOT-TH) on Monday inspected a Thai border patrol route where four Cambodian-origin landmines were recently discovered, raising concerns about potential violations of the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel mines.

The multi-national AOT-TH delegation visited the Kantharalak district in Si Sa Ket province to verify the evidence after a Thai soldier narrowly avoided injury when stepping on one of the mines last month. Thai military officials presented four PMN-2 landmines found along the routine patrol path near Khao Satta Som.

Thai authorities argued that the mines, despite being laid shortly before a peace agreement, show clear serial numbers and demonstrate a consistent pattern of violating international law. The mine samples were described by the AOT head as appearing to be "new landmines."

The strategic area, close to Preah Vihear Temple, remains highly sensitive. Officials from the National Mine Action Centre noted that recent conflicts have reversed demining efforts, turning previously clear zones back into mine-contaminated areas.

The AOT team is continuing its investigation into alleged Cambodian treaty violations. -819 (TNA)
