Head Of The Commission Of Integrity From Doha: Corruption Is An International Scourge

Baghdad / NINA /- The Head of Iraq’s Federal Commission of Integrity, Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, affirmed that corruption is a transnational global scourge that requires concerted international efforts to combat it and prevent its adverse impacts.
Speaking during his participation in the 11th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC CoSP11), held in the Qatari capital Doha, Al-Lami highlighted Iraq’s national efforts to implement the provisions of the UN convention. He stressed the firm belief in the necessity of international cooperation to combat corruption, describing it as a cross-border disease that, much like epidemics and illnesses, can only be addressed through collective action.
Al-Lami noted that the Commission has completed the preparations to launch the National Integrity and Anti-Corruption Strategy, which aims to enhance transparency, strengthen governance systems, and advance digital transformation.
He explained that Iraq’s efforts are not limited to financial oversight and punitive investigative measures, but are also grounded in respect for human rights as a fundamental principle. These efforts include launching programs to empower youth as key drivers in promoting a culture of integrity, in addition to issuing a code of conduct for elections to ensure that state resources are not misused.
Regarding asset and fund recovery, Al-Lami underscored that this issue occupies a central place within national efforts, renewing his call on States Parties to the Convention to strengthen effective cooperation in order to overcome the challenges that continue to hinder the swift execution of recovery requests.
He concluded by reaffirming Iraq’s determination to move forward in its fight against corruption, relying on institutional independence, community partnership, and productive international cooperation./ End
