Officially, the UN General Assembly Elects Barham Salih as High Commissioner for Refugees

Baghdad / NINA /- The United Nations General Assembly officially elected former Iraqi President Barham Salih on Thursday as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
The President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, congratulated Salih on his election, expressing her anticipation of working closely with him in the period ahead.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the General Assembly’s decision to elect Barham Salih as High Commissioner for Refugees for a five-year term.
Earlier, on December 12, Guterres had submitted an official letter to the General Assembly calling for the endorsement of the nomination of former Iraqi President Barham Salih for the post of UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Barham Salih is scheduled to assume office on January 1, 2026, succeeding Italian Filippo Grandi, with Geneva serving as the headquarters of his mandate./ End
