Malaysia To Continue Facilitating Google Investment

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- The Communications Ministry, together with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will continue to facilitate the implementation of a US$2 billion investment by technology giant Google in Malaysia.

Communications Minister  Fahmi Fadzil said the efforts include ensuring infrastructure readiness and regulatory compliance, in line with strengthening Malaysia’s aspiration to become a regional hub for secure data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation.

“This investment, which includes Google’s first data centre and cloud services in Malaysia, is expected to generate an economic impact of US$3.2 billion (US$1=RM3.88) and create 26,500 jobs by 2030.

“Malaysia continues to be trusted as a leading destination for the digital economy,” he said in a Facebook post Thursday.

In the post, Fahmi also shared several photos and videos of his participation in a video conference session involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Alphabet and Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat, along with her team, earlier this morning.

In May 2024, Google announced an investment commitment of RM9.4 billion in Malaysia, covering the development of its first data centre and Google Cloud Region to meet growing demand for cloud services at both local and global levels, as well as AI literacy programmes for students and educators in the country.
