Govt offices remain close as employees continue strike

Jammu/Srinagar, July 23 (PTI) Work in government offices
across India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir was hit
for the second consecutive day on Thursday as over 4.5 lakh
employees stayed away from their offices demanding early
implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

The two-day strike, called by the Employees Joint Action
Committee (EJAC) and Joint Consultative Committee - an amalgam
of various government employees associations - to protest the
delay in the implementation of the panel's recommendations,
began yesterday with thousands of people taking to streets.

As compared to Wednesday's massive protests at various
places in the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu
besides tehsil and district headquarters, the agitators mostly
stayed home today barring a few protest demonstrations.

About 800 employees held protest demonstrations near
Exhibition ground in Jammu where leaders of EJAC- Ram Kumar,
Gafoor Dar, Balwant Singh and Dinesh Khajuria- addressed them.

Another such demonstration was staged by the agitators
at Sher-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar, highlighting their other
demands, including release of arrears recommended by the pay
panel to employees and pensioners, extension of retirement age
by two years, increase in House Rent Allowance (HRA) and
increase in the wages of daily workers, adhoc and contractual
employees.

Meanwhile, the state government has promised to
implement the recommendations from the current month. PTI AMS
