LG reinforces global presence with premium phones in Q2
SEOUL, July 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. said Monday its
mobile handset sales gained 8 percent from a year earlier to 29.8 million units
in the second quarter of this year, reinforcing its presence in the global market
with its premium strategy,
During the April-June period, sales of the world's third largest handset maker
showed a 32 percent jump from the previous quarter.
LG Electronics attributed the growth largely to its strategy of targeting the
premium phone category in Europe and North America.
In Europe, the South Korean company sold 4.9 million units in the second quarter,
up 22 percent from the previous quarter and up 35 percent from a year ago.
LG's second quarter sales in the European countries accounted for 17 percent of
its total sales, compared to 11 percent in the same period last year.
LG saw record-high sales in the North American market, selling 10.6 million units
in the second quarter. It was the second time for the company to sell more than
10 million units in North America, up 24 percent from the first quarter and up 14
percent year-on-year.
The company said it also has been increasing its market presence in emerging
markets, including China, the Middle East and Africa.
