S. Korea's two airlines may hike fuel surcharges
SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's two major airlines are likely to
increase fuel surcharges for international routes in September to reflect a rise
in jet fuel prices, industry sources said Tuesday.
Korean Air Lines Co., the larger of the two, and Asiana Airlines Inc. may levy as
much as US$10 in fuel surcharges for one-way flights in Asia and $23 for one-way
flights to Europe and the United States, they said.
The government-set surcharge system allows the carriers to adjust surcharges for
international routes monthly in tandem with the average price of fuel oil in the
previous two months.
The average price of jet fuel hovered at about $1.77 a gallon on the Singaporean
spot market from June 1 to July 24, the sources said.
The airlines can impose fuel surcharges on their international flights if the
average price of jet fuel is above $1.5 a gallon.
