"There's never anything that's not discussable between our great friends and
allies in South Korea, but, as you know, our president, our secretary of defense
remain committed to OPCON transfer in April of 2012 and I am unaware of any
serious discussions otherwise," Adm. Timothy Keating told a news conference.
"We're committed to OPCON, as is the president, minister of defense, and chief of
defense staff in South Korea."

SEOUL -- A South Korean lawmaker and officials from his aid group canceled a
planned visit to Pyongyang Wednesday, as they had not received the required
invitation from North Korea, officials said.
The trip, had it been made, would have marked Seoul's first approval of a North
Korea visit by a non-governmental group since Pyongyang's second nuclear test on
May 25.

S. Korea able to achieve growth outlook for 2009: finance minister
SEOUL -- South Korea will likely achieve its growth prediction for this year as
economic conditions are improving from the turmoil sparked by the global
financial crisis last year, the nation's top economic policymaker said Wednesday.
Last month, the government predicted that the nation's gross domestic product
will shrink 1.5 percent this year, revising its earlier prediction of minus 2
percent, citing expanded fiscal spending and other stimulus measures.

SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea posted the second-largest current account
surplus ever in June as exports of steel and electronic products picked up, and
will likely see another surplus for July, the central bank said Wednesday.
The current account surplus reached US$5.43 billion last month, up from a revised
$3.5 billion in May, the Bank of Korea (BOK) said in a report. The cumulative
surplus was a record $21.75 billion for the first half.

Global investment banks upgrade growth projections for S. Korea
SEOUL -- Global investment banks are painting a rosier view of the South Korean
economy for this year as indicators point to a rebound from the turmoil sparked
by the financial crisis last year, financial bodies said Wednesday.
According to data provided by the Korea Center for International Finance and
other financial institutes, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Barclays and other
major investment banks recently upgraded their growth outlooks for South Korea,
citing improving domestic demand and exports.

SEOUL -- Samsung Heavy Industries Co., the world's second-biggest shipbuilder,
said Wednesday it has signed an agreement with Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe's
largest oil company, to construct liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities for up
to 15 years.
Under the agreement, Samsung Heavy and Technip SA, a French oil and gas producer,
will design, construct and install multiple floating LNG facilities.
