KEPCO unit dedicates small hydropower plant with S. Korea's largest capacity

SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- Korea Midland Power Co., a unit of South Korea's
state-run Korea Electric Power Corp., has opened a hydroelectric power plant with
the country's largest-ever capacity, the company said Wednesday.

The plant, located in the seaside city of Boryeong, 160km southwest of Seoul, has
a generation capacity of 7.5 megawatts, it said.
Construction began in March 2007, with the plant being opened on Sunday, when it
began commercial operation.
The plant generates electricity by recycling sea water, which is used as a
coolant for the eight thermal power generators nearby.
The plant is expected to enable Korea Midland to reduce carbon emissions by
13,715 tons annually, according to the company.
