Samsung Electronics dominates U.S. LED TV market in H1

SEOUL, July 30 (Yonhap) -- More than nine out of every 10 light-emitting diode
(LED) TVs sold in the United States are manufactured by South Korea's electronics
giant Samsung Electronics Co., a market researcher said Thursday.
According to a report by NPD Group, Samsung Electronics' market share stood at
94.8 percent in the first half of 2009 in terms of the number of LED TV units
sold in America. Japan's Sony trailed with a mere 2.8 percent.
In March, Samsung Electronics launched global sales of its newest LED line of
flat panel TVs, an ultra-slim, wall-hanging model that reduces the gap between
the TV and the wall to around 1.5 centimeters.
Using LEDs as their primary light source rather than traditional Cold Cathode
Fluorescent Lamps, the new TV features an ultra-high color contrast, the
manufacturer said.
"We successfully landed in a new 'Blue Ocean' market in the TV industry," said
Kim Yang-kyu, an official at Samsung's display unit in an e-mailed statement. "We
will continue doing our best to leave our mark on the TV industry."
