Share of Samsung, LG top 30 pct in global handset market
SEOUL, July 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and LG
Electronics Inc. saw their combined share of the global mobile handset market
surpass 30 percent for the first time in the second quarter, market reports
showed Friday.
U.S.-based market researcher IDC said in its latest report that Samsung and LG
together held a 30.5 percent market share in the mobile handset market during the
April-June period.
Samsung's share rose by 4.2 percentage points from a year earlier to 19.4 percent
in the second quarter, and LG increased its portion by 1.8 percentage points to
11.1 percent, according to IDC.
Another U.S. market researcher, Strategy Analytics (SA), said Samsung Electronics
had a 19.2 percent market share and LG Electronics had 10.9 percent, for a total
of 30.1 percent.
In contrast, market shares for the other three players in the world's top five
handset makers dropped in the second quarter from the same period last year.
Finland's Nokia Corp., the world's largest handset maker, saw its market share
fall from 40.4 percent to 38.3 percent, according to IDC.
Motorola Inc.'s market share dropped from 9.2 percent to 5.5 percent, while Sony
Ericsson Mobile Communications Inc. lagged further behind with 5.1 percent, down
3 percentage points.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have been increasing their market presence
in the U.S. and Europe by providing a diverse range of products, including
premium and high-end phones.
