S. Korean president extols late Aquino's accomplishments

SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak sent a letter of
condolences to the Philippines Sunday over the death of the country's former
leader Corazon Aquino, aides said.
"President Lee said that Former President Aquino's courageous leadership greatly
contributed to the development of the Filipino democracy and human rights
record," Kim Eun-hye, a spokeswoman for the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae,
said.
Lee extended "heartfelt" condolences to the bereaved families and the Filipinos,
Kim added.
Aquino died early Saturday at a Manila hospital at the age of 76 after a yearlong
battle with colon cancer. She was the country's democracy icon who swept away a
dictator and inspired nonviolent resistance to autocratic rule.
