S. Korean IT exports fall 10 pct in July

By Lee Joon-seung

SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's exports of information technology (IT) products fell 10.2 percent on-year in July as the global economic downturn hurt overseas demand, a government report showed Wednesday.

Exports of semiconductors, mobile phones and other IT products totaled US$10.91
billion last month, with imports dropping 14.1 percent to $5.74 billion for a
surplus of little over $5.16 billion, according to the report by the Ministry of
Knowledge Economy.
While July's outbound shipments fell compared to the year before, when the total
reached $12.14 billion, export volume increased by $740 million vis-a-vis June,
the report said.
"Despite difficult conditions, local IT companies made steady gains in expanding
their market share, with total exports exceeding the 10 billion dollar mark for
the second month in a row," said Seo Seok-jin, head of the ministry's IT policy
coordination division.
He pointed out that, on a monthly basis, IT exports have increased for seven
straight months since December 2008.
IT exports stood at $6.51 billion in December but topped $7.68 billion in
February and $9.65 billion in May before reaching $10.17 billion in June.
Of the three top-selling IT products, exports of display panels gained 5.2
percent on-year to $2.5 billion last month thanks mainly to various economic
stimulus packages introduced by foreign governments, Seo said.
Overseas sales of mobile phones and semiconductors declined 11.3 percent and 15.6
percent, respectively, although the rate of decline decreased.
The ministry, in charge of the country's industrial policy and trade promotion,
said China and Hong Kong were the biggest importers of Korean-made IT products
last month, buying $463 billion worth, followed by the United States with $1.45
billion and the European Union with $1.43 billion.
Outbound shipments to Japan and Latin America stood at $610 million and $670
million, respectively.
Year-on-year, IT exports contracted 21 percent to $63.56 billion between January
and July, with imports falling 25.2 percent to $33.84 billion during the period
for a surplus of $29.72 billion.
In the same seven-month period, South Korea's overall exports were down 22.2
percent to $198.39 billion, with inbound shipments plunging 34.7 percent to
172.16 billion for a surplus of $26.23 billion.
