South Korea's boxing body appeals against chief's suspension
By Kim Boram
SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's amateur boxing governing body has appealed to its international counterpart to reconsider the punishment of its chief held responsible for sending an unregistered staff member to a world competition, an official here said Wednesday.
The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) last week suspended the head
of the Korean Amateur Boxing Federation (KABF), Yoo Jae-joon, for 18 months and
fined him 2,000 Swiss francs (US$1,800) for sending an unapproved team doctor to
a world junior championship in May.
"We had an attorney submit the proposal to reconsider the disciplinary decision
on Yoo to the secretariat of AIBA in Switzerland on Monday," an official at KABF
said. "We will decide whether to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for
Sports (CAS) after AIBA makes a decision."
The KABF has also been accused of weigh-in falsification at a local boxing
tournament, after which AIBA banned South Korean boxers from participating in all
international competitions.
South Korea's top sports governing body, the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC), has
continuously demanded that South Korean players be allowed to compete in the
world championship in Italy next month despite the reprimand. AIBA has not
responded to the request, officials said..
A KOC official said that its head Park Yong-sung will have talks with AIBA
President Wu Ching-Kuo Wu on Thursday in Seoul to get a clear answer.
Wu is scheduled to visit South Korea on Thursday at the invitation of the World
Youth Taekwondo Camp running from Aug. 6 to 11 in Seoul and Muju, 241 kilometer
south of the capital.
