S. Korea to expand aviation personnel training for developing countries

SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea plans to expand training for aviation
industry personnel from developing countries as part of its contribution to
improving worldwide safety and service standards, the government said Monday.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said the arrangement reached
with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) calls for increasing
the scope of education and number of trainees that will be taught in the country.
Seoul already provides three training programs for technicians and flight support
personnel, but will introduce new courses and increase the number of people it
will school starting in 2010.
New courses that will be added to the curriculum are airport management, and
aviation security, with up to 135 trainees to be invited to the country from just
45 at present.
"There has been a steady increase in the number of people from Asian and African
countries who wanted to receive training in South Korea so there was a need to
upgrade existing programs," a ministry official said.
The official also said that beside state-run Korea Airport Corp., training will
be provided by Incheon International Airport Corp. and Korea Aerospace
University.
ICAO, meanwhile, will be responsible for advertising the programs to its 190
members with Korea International Cooperation Agency paying for the training,
lodgings and air fare.
