The rare trip by Hyun Jung-eun comes amid growing speculation that North Korea
may extend a friendly gesture toward Seoul in line with its recent pardoning of
two American journalists.

N. Korea should return to 6-way talks for improved ties: White House
WASHINGTON -- The United States will deal with North Korea through six-party
talks despite Pyongyang's hope to improve ties with Washington through bilateral
negotiations, National Security Adviser James Jones said Sunday.
"The North Koreans have indicated they would like a new relationship, a better
relationship with the United States," Jones said in an interview with "Fox News
Sunday."

Growth of S. Korea's short-term funds hit 7-year high in June
SEOUL -- South Korea's short-term funds grew at the fastest clip in almost seven
years in June as investors were unable to find adequate long-term investment
vehicles and the government's fiscal spending increased, the central bank said
Monday.
The country's M1, the narrowest gauge of money supply, reached 362.1 trillion won
(US$296.3 billion) in June, up 18.5 percent from a year earlier, according to the
Bank of Korea (BOK). June's growth accelerated from an annual 17 percent gain in
May and marked the steepest expansion since August 2002 when M1 jumped 20.3
percent.

Banks' home-backed loans continue to grow in July
SEOUL -- South Korean banks' home-backed loans continued to grow by over 3
trillion won (US$2.45 billion) in July amid record-low borrowing costs and rising
housing prices, the central bank said Monday.
As of the end of July, outstanding bank mortgage loans amounted to 257.8 trillion
won, up 3.4 trillion won from a month earlier, the Bank of Korea (BOK) said.

S. Korea's Q2 manufacturing output grows most in 36-years
SEOUL -- South Korea's second-quarter manufacturing output posted the biggest
quarterly gain in 36 years as companies scurried to raise inventory amid
resilient demand, data showed Monday.
Manufacturing production expanded 8.2 percent in the April-June period from three
months earlier, the fastest growth since 8.2 percent in the fourth quarter of
1973, according to the data by the Bank of Korea (BOK).

President Lee calls for 'green' way of life to fight climate change
SEOUL -- President Lee Myung-bak urged South Korean citizens Monday to change
their way of life into one that is more environmentally friendly, saying
international efforts to fight climate change begin with those of the individual.
"There is something more important than green technology, and that is a green way
of life," Lee said in his biweekly national radio address.

S. Korea to expand aviation personnel training for developing countries
SEOUL -- South Korea plans to expand training for aviation industry personnel
from developing countries as part of its contribution to improving worldwide
safety and service standards, the government said Monday.
The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said the arrangement reached
with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) calls for increasing
the scope of education and number of trainees that will be taught in the country.
