S. Korean chip makers claim record-high DRAM market share in Q1
SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean chip makers grabbed their largest-ever
market share in the global DRAM market during the first three months this year,
widening their lead over other global competitors, a report showed Tuesday.
DRAM is a type of memory that stores each bit of data in a separate electronic
component within a circuit. It is used in personal computers and other electronic
devices such as mobile phones.
According to market researcher iSuppli, South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.
held a 34.10 percent market share and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. a 21.40 percent
share in the first quarter of 2009, together reaching 55.5 percent.
It was the first time that the two companies' combined market share topped 55
percent. The previous high was 50.76 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007.
