S. Korea No. 1 exporter of telecom equipment: OECD report
SEOUL, Aug. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea was the biggest exporter of
telecommunication equipment in 2007 among member countries of the Organization
for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a report said Wednesday.
According to the OECD report, South Korea was the top shipper of telecom
equipment among the 30 member nations with US$29.8 billion, followed by the
United States with $26 billion. Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Mexico
and China were also the world's major exporters of telecom equipment.
South Korea posted the biggest trade surplus of $24.7 billion in telecom
equipment trade.
The telecom sector accounted for 3.07 percent of South Korea's gross domestic
product (GDP), which was far above the average of 0.43 percent among OECD
members.
The largest importer of South Korean equipment was China, which accounted for
54.7 percent, followed by Japan with 11.5 percent. Mexico, the U.S. and Germany
were also among the main importers, according to the report.
