American man cited for rescuing drowning Korean students

MOKPO, South Korea, Aug.12 (Yonhap)-- An American man has been honored by local
rescue authorities for saving two South Korean students from drowning, officials
here said Wednesday.
Daniel Smith, a 23-year-old English instructor on a two-week visit to this
southwestern port city, deserves full credit for saving two college students,
both aged 19, whom he noticed in trouble off a beach in Mokpo, 410 km south of
Seoul, Monday night, said the officials.
After pulling them from the water, Smith administered cardiopulmonary
resuscitation to one of the students whose condition was precarious.
In addition to the citation, the Mokpo Fire Station presented Smith with a "Heart
Saver" badge in recognition of his emergency cardiopulmonary treatment, said the
officials.
"I'm sure anyone would have done the same thing I did," said Smith, who received
formal lifeguard education in the U.S., after an awarding ceremony at the fire
station.
